The Kumarakom Lake Resort has several traditional kettuvalloms or houseboats equipped with luxurious modern amenities.
The typical houseboat offers the opportunity to relax on the serene waters of the Lake Kumarakom. You can choose to stay in one of these houseboats for few days, take a sunset tour or book it for half a day.
I did a half day tour in the houseboat that had had two fully furnished air-conditioned bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a small but functional kitchen and a dining and relaxing area.
In attendance was a cook, a captain and an engine man. The houseboat’s floor was laid with coir matting which is famous in Kerala and the boat’s interior was made of predominantly bamboo, wood and coconut fronds.
The boat travelled the Lake slowly and the heat was scorching. But I enjoyed every minute of the time spent in the house-boat –enjoying the soft breeze and watching many different birds. Occasionally I saw a fish or two jumping up and above the water; women chatting and washing clothes; children playing and waving at me.
Occasionally some dugout canoes passed by. Rustic homes, a temple and hundreds of coconut trees lined the banks. There were also paddy fields, boat stops where people wait for their transport and houses here and there…….. And I can tell you more than a hundred things I saw!! It was such a long time since I unplugged myself from the daily phone calls, the internet, television, computer, mobile phone and text messages!
Our private cook, Chef Abilash prepared, one of the best fish curries I had ever tasted together with tempered tapioca, fried fish, appam, Kerala Matta rice, large chilli scampi, mixed vegetable and a chamanthi. The best place to eat spicy seafood is near its source – water!
I personally feel that a holiday in Cochin is not complete without at least a half day journey in a houseboat. Though there are many companies offering houseboats for rent at competitive prices, the houseboats owned by Kumarakom Lake Resort are the best as they are all well maintained, safe and comfortable.
