REST AND RELAX AT KUMARAKOM LAKE RESORT

On two occasions I have put up at The Paul and was satisfied with the rooms, food and friendliness of the staff.  I stayed at the Kumarakom Lake Resort, a property managed by The Paul on my recent trip to Kochi. The journey from Edakochi to Kumarakom, was about 44km by road and it took me a good one and a half hours. Along the way, I went past picturesque green paddy fields of Kuttanad, small towns, villages, coconut tree groves and backwaters.  It was such a relaxing and pleasant drive.

Upon arrival at the resort, I was given a traditional welcome by a pleasant lady in a traditional Malayalee costume.  A cold towel was then given to refresh myself followed by a coconut drink to perk me up after the long drive.  I just soaked myself in the warm reception by the staff.

Kumarakom Lake Resort overlooks the mighty Vembanad Lake and spread across 25 acres of greenery with picturesque waterways, several paved paths and out-of-a-movie-like small bridges. Trees and plants are labeled to make it an education centre for herbs and spice plants. Every nook and corner of the resort springs surprises be they a brass tub of water artistically arranged with floating flowers or the antique looking lamps suspended from the ceiling, the huge granite stones that dotted here and there on the lawn giving a rustic look etc. The staff ranging from managers to gardeners were all polite and smiling.

The Kumarakom Lake Resort has 42 villas ranging from Presidential Suites to Heritage Lake Villas with Private Pools including Heritage Villas, Meandering Pool Villas, Luxury Pavilion rooms and Kerala’s famous Houseboats!  The villas have old architectural charm like high teak wood ceiling, huge king beds and spacious open roofed en suite shower and toilet with modern amenities.  Apparently, each of the villa was reconstructed and rebuilt out of 16th century houses in Kerala by hand.  All the villas retain the heritage values and looks. The entire resort maintains this theme and thus made me feel as though I am living in one of the villages of Kerala!

The Heritage and Heritage Lake View Villas have private plunge pools and Jacuzzis in their own courtyards.  The Heritage Lake View Villa has a  panoramic views of the Vembanad lake. There are only two  Presidential Suites with lots of space and luxury and have wonderful views of the lake, private pools, jacuzzi and courtyards. The Luxury Pavilion rooms are set in lush foliage. The Meandering Pool Villas have direct access to the pool from their private sit-outs. Some of these are duplexes, with the bedroom overlooking the pool.

My Meandering Pool villa had a tray of edible goodies from black sesame balls and murukku to chocolate and a basket of fresh fruits. The villa was equipped with all the basic amenities like a tea-coffee maker, shaving-dental kit, bath robes, etc. I have always felt good about hotels looking into small details like this. There is also an infinity swimming pool with jacuzzi, overlooking the lake.  You can sit by the pool or take a dip.

After checking in, I decided to explore the Thattukada, an open garden tea stall.  Guests are treated to an afternoon tea, Kerala style with snacks and pulled “meter” long milk tea or filter coffee every afternoon from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm.  Thattukada is a typical Indian street tea stall and at Kumarakom Lake Resort, it has been given a new dimension. The tea stall is clean, and the waiters neatly dressed in uniform provided an impeccable service.

It was very hot and bothersome to sit out in the lawn overlooking the lake even though there were shady trees and a nice breeze.  It was simply heavenly when refreshed with a good tea and delectable snacks like Onion fritters, Pazham Pori (fried Nendra banana slices), masala vadais etc.  The snacks are different every day so that people who stay there for many days would not get bored. You can watch the “tea master” there in action and he further obliged me by demonstrating how he pulled the tea.

The stall has jars of cookies and traditional Kerala snacks for the guests to munch on.  Old Cinema posters and bunches of bananas hanging by coir ropes  give a nice finish of antiquity to the Thattukada. The resort also offers complimentary one hour sunset cruises which many of the guests take after their snacks and tea at the Thattukada.

Towards evening, the weather is cool and breezy.  The Kumarakon Lake Resort offers a variety of activities to keep guests busy and entertained. There are activities like weaving, pottery, fishing, cycling, village walks, visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, exercise in the gym etc. apart from indoor games like pool, carrom and chess.  Guests can take part in the yoga and meditation classes in the morning.

In the evening, cultural performances such as Kathakali or Kalari Payat (Indian self defence) are often staged.  There is also a souvenir shop selling the usual touristy stuff like locally make bags, wallets, wooden sculptures, no alcohol perfumes and books.  There is also a coconut stall within the compound to quench your thirst. If all these are boring stuff, there are hammocks to lie and relax or take a nap in the open, overlooking the Vembanad Lake.

Another alternative is to indulge ayurvedic massages and facials at The Ayurmana – the heritage retreat of Ayurvedic healing.  Read more

Sometimes we all need a break and a chance to refresh, relax and rejuvenate and I think Kumarakom Lake Resort is the perfect place.  It is also a great place for honeymooners and ideal place to have a wedding reception too.
