The last few days of my stay in Jaipur are spent in a resort in the countryside – The Farm. It is a real Indian countryside, about 20 minutes away from town. One must experience this part of India. So much to see and inhale on the way to The Farm -children, cows, adults, men in colourful turbans, little restaurants and tea stalls, wheat and millet farms, people travelling triples in old rickety bicycles, friendly stray dogs and I can just go on. I loved the smell of the countryside – a mix of green grass, marigold, jasmine, cow dung, cardamoms, tea, incense sticks, camphor and so on. The Farm is owned by Surya Singh and his wife Ritu.
Surya’s father, Pratap Bhanu Singh is a member of the Rajput warrior caste and has lived in a more than hundred-year-old palace for many generations. When the palace must be given up for building of a highway, the family stored many of the antique furniture, doors, windows, beams and even the bolts and screws in a warehouse. Surya then created The Farm hotel – truly a labour of love of both husband and wife. They used many of the stuff that were taken from the old palace to create wonderful hotel!
A swimming pool is centre stage and it is surround by one-bedroom villas. There are more rooms downstairs. Practically everything used as décor or a fixture at The Farm is recycled from something for example, the beams at the dining area and the shelves in the poolside bar and kitchen were from the palace. The shower curtain in the bathroom was made of bubble wrap!
At every turn I made at The Farm, there is a surprise – I am surprised by the brilliant recycling idea this creative couple. Looks like they reused anything that came to their hands. The photos above will speak for these!!
They manage The Farm with a few staff who multi-task. You can choose to have breakfast, lunch and dinner but must inform them earlier. The Farm, is the sort of place you want to just laze around, eat and sleep, walk, watch movies, practice yoga, do some painting, or chat with fellow guests. Transport can be arranged for you to be picked up or dropped anywhere. Food is simple, wholesome and nutritious. Since the couple stay there, you get to dine with them occasionally too.
I thank Surya Singh and Ritu for sponsoring my stay and their kind hospitality.
