Hung Teen Wu (Sessile Joyweed)

I saw a number of elderly Chinese ladies buying bunches of the Hung Teen Wu leaves at the supermarket. I asked a few of them about the leaves and was surprised that it has many health benefits. One of the ladies said that her husband had high cholesterol and after drinking the hung teen wu herbal drink regularly for two weeks, the cholesterol level went down. Furthermore, when drunk, regularly this herbal drink helps remove impurities from the blood and also “cools” the body.

I was told that hung teen wu herbs help to detoxify as well as cleanse our blood circulation.  Though, my research on the internet shows that there are no side effects, it is best to drink in moderation. You can keep the drink refrigerated for up to 3 days.

250 g Hung Teen Wu

3-4 honey dates (available in Chinese medicine shops as well as some supermarkets)

4000 ml water

  1. Clean and wash the leaves. Remove any yellow or decaying leaves.
  2. Place in a stainless steel pot with water and the dates and boil over medium heat for about 1 hour.
  3. Strain into jugs and drink throughout the day as you would drink water.
