Grapefruits are full of vitamin C. Vitamin C is helpful to fight infection and protects against free radicals. Too much of free radicals in your body can contribute to development of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. Vitamin C also helps to keep our gums healthy and keeps the teeth firmly in place.

Grapefruits also have potassium and folate which lowers blood pressure. People who are on a low calorie diet can benefit from eating grapefruits. It is a good source of fibre which helps keep us full longer by taking time to digest. Because of the high water content, grapefruit also keeps you hydrated. The bitter taste of grapefruit, Naringenin, helps to prevent the formation of kidney stones and cysts and reduces swelling in the kidneys that is caused by fluid retention.


Red grapefruit also known as Ruby grapefruit has a deep red flesh and juice. It is rich in lycopene (a powerful cancer-fighting phytonutrient) and beta-carotene. Red Grapefruits are sweeter than the white grapefruits.

The traditional white grapefruit is sometimes called yellow grapefruits. The flesh is light yellow and the juice is almost colorless. The juice is slightly tangy and the flesh firm in texture.

Pink grapefruit is light yellow with a pink tinge. It is high in lycopene and beta-carotene. It has a balanced sweet and tangy taste and the flesh is usually very juicy.


Buy grapefruit with skin that is thin, smooth, firm, blemish free. It must also be heavy for its size. If it is light for its size, it means it is dry and not juicy. Do not buy those with large pores – they too are dry.


You can store grapefruits at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the refrigerator 2 to 3 weeks.
